Earlier this year, I was asked to speak to a group of inexperienced players before their casino trip. One who had just started playing blackjack said he was confused over why the house had an edge. After all, the dealer is stuck hitting or standing according to set rules, while players can make decisions, and the dealer can’t double down, split pairs or get paid 3-2 on blackjacks. That’s all true, but those are all ways to make up for the one big edge the casino has: Players can bust and lose before the dealer even plays his hand. If…

This has to be my favorite time of the year. I look forward to the sun shining and warmer temperatures after a long winter. When Spring arrives I can not wait to get outside, take a stroll and explore. The great thing about being in Tunica is that I don't have to go far to take a Spring stroll and if strolling is not your thing we even have a bike trail. Here are a couple of my favorite places to visit - (more…)

In honor of Veterans of all Branches of the Military: those who made the supreme sacrifice, those honorably discharged and those who continue to serve their country, this unique Sculpture captures a poignant scene from the Vietnam War depicting the sacrifice, compassion and courage displayed by those who went in harm’s way. On November 11, 2002, the Town of Tunica established the Veterans Memorial Park at the edge of our quiet and quaint downtown. The words above are etched on the plaque that welcomes you to the park and is surrounded by beautiful landscaping and benches for sitting to take…

Whether it’s the bounce of the dice or the turn of a phrase, funny things happen at the craps table. Just ask Wes and Faye, craps players who sent along their stories for our amusement. Wes: Six in the morning, I was warming up, playing alone at the only table that was open. Just me and the crew. I might have been ahead a little bit. I’d make a couple of points, seven out, then point seven the next time, then make a couple of points. This other guy asks if he can join me. I told him welcome to…

Every month, the Mississippi Gaming Commission publishes statistical reports that tell us, among other things, how much slot machines are paying back to players. In March, for example, non-progressive slots payed 91.16 percent in penny denominations, 93.72 on nickels, 92.41 percent on quarters and 96.81 percent on dollars. The full report includes other denominations as well as progressives, but the Tunica average for all slots was 91.75 percent. Whenever I relay such information, I get reaction from readers who wonder how that can possibly be right. “When I put $100 into a machine, I don’t leave with $90,” they’ll say.…

It’s finally spring and for those of us in the Delta that means it’s planting season! Over the last couple of weeks, we’ve heard crop dusters flying over our building to fertilize the land, as well as, seen the tractors getting out to till the land. In the Mississippi Delta, farmers will plant crops including soybeans, corn, rice, wheat, peanuts and the most asked about crop by our visitors, cotton. Cotton is definitely one of the most picturesque of the crops in the Delta, so it’s no wonder that visitors love it! Even when it’s not in season you can…

Players float roulette systems past me several times a year. The variety of wagers available opens the door to creating combination bets, with players hoping different bets will cancel out each other’s weaknesses. It doesn’t really work that way. The house edge remains intact, though there’s no real harm in trying as long as you stay within a budget you can afford. One simple combination was forwarded to me in April: “I bet $10 on black and $1 each on five different red numbers,” the player wrote. “That way, I have 23 numbers that win and only 15 numbers that…
